The Balanced Kitchen

Combining good design with feng shui principles is a sure-fire recipe for a healthy, harmonious, and balanced kitchen. When designing a kitchen, aesthetics and functionality are often the top priorities, but integrating feng shui as another dimension can add an energy that is just as crucial as the layout and materials.

In feng shui, the kitchen is more than a place to prepare meals – it’s a hub of nourishment, family connection and financial wellbeing. “The kitchen provides Qi energy to the occupants via the food that is prepared here,” says IFSA Accredited Master Kelly McCloskey.

So how can you create a kitchen that encourages harmony, prosperity and balance?

Here’s what Master Kelly suggests.

Fire and water: Balancing the elements

In feng shui, every space is governed by the five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The kitchen is naturally dominated by fire (represented by the stove and oven) and water (represented by the sink and fridge).

When these elements are placed directly opposite each other, such as a stove facing a sink, it creates energetic tension, which Master Kelly says can manifest as conflict in the household. “A clash between fire and water can cause a clash between the people living in the home, especially in relationships,” she explains.

To avoid this, ensure the stove and sink are positioned at an angle rather than directly facing one another. If a redesign isn’t possible, introducing a wood element, such as a timber chopping board or a green plant, between these opposing features can help.

Why your stove placement matters

The position of the stove is key to fostering wealth and stability. “You shouldn’t be able to see the stove from the front door,” says Master Kelly. “If you can, it’s believed that your wealth may be heading straight out the door.” Additionally, the stove should always face into the home rather than outward towards the street.

Another practical tip? Use all burners on the stove regularly. “Each burner represents a source of financial opportunity – so activating them ensures that all working members of the household can generate a successful income,” Master Kelly advises.

A colour palette for prosperity

Colour psychology also plays a significant role in feng shui, and the kitchen is no exception.

While red may seem like an energising choice, Master Kelly advises against it. “The stove already brings the fire element, adding red to the colour scheme can create an excess of fire energy, increasing the risk of real-life tension or even accidents,” she explains. Instead, opt for a balanced palette of earthy neutrals, soft whites, or muted greens to promote a sense of stability and nourishment.

Decluttering is always good

A cluttered, greasy stove isn’t just an eyesore, it’s also believed to impact both health and financial prosperity. “A dirty stove can block the family’s income potential,” says Master Kelly.  Regular cleaning is essential, not just for hygiene but for maintaining a positive energy flow.

Likewise, broken or chipped crockery should be discarded. “Damaged items hold damaged energy,” Master Kelly notes. Keeping only intact, well-loved kitchenware ensures that the energy in the space remains supportive and harmonious.

Designing with intention

Ultimately, a feng shui-inspired kitchen isn’t just about spatial arrangements and colour schemes, it’s about creating a space where food is prepared with love, where conversations flow freely, and where prosperity can flourish.

Thoughtful design choices, from stove placement to decluttering habits, can transform the kitchen into a sanctuary of warmth and abundance.

To avoid this, ensure the stove and sink are positioned at an angle rather than directly facing one another. If a redesign isn’t possible, introducing a wood element, such as a timber chopping board or a green plant, between these opposing features can help.
