Edgar Lok Tin Yung has been using Feng Shui, Chinese Astrology, Bazi and Zi Wei Dou Shu to help the Chinese community in Melbourne since early 2000. He also writes weekly Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology articles for two Melbourne based Chinese magazines.
In this article Edgar shares his annual Chinese Astrology and Feng Shui Predictions for the Year of the Wood Horse.
PredMost Chinese Astrology Consultants or Feng Shui Masters nowadays just use the ‘Start of Spring (立春日)’ day and time plus the year and month in Lunar Calendar to construct a Four Pillars chart to predict events for the coming year.In my opinion, using the ‘Start of Spring day’ and time to predict for the coming year is inaccurate as the Start of Spring day always falls in the Tiger month. Such Start of Spring day Four Pillar or Bazi chart is used to predict personal luck. It does not predict Heaven Luck or world issues. Yearly prediction should use the Jia zi (甲子) cycle (Sexagenary cycle) and look at three different levels using the elements of the Heavenly Stem and Earthly branch of the year. These three levels are:
- The Heaven Luck (predicts major issues of the world and weather).
- The Earth Luck (Feng Shui for homes and offices.)
- The Man Luck (predicts individual animal sign luck in the coming year)
Heaven Luck
Heaven Luck is used to predict major world events, weather and natural disasters so that people can prepare for it. The Heaven Luck energy kicks in when the Earth is passing the Winter Solstice, normally on the 21st or 22nd of December each year.In my 2012 year of the Dragon predictions I mentioned, “According to calculation, the year of the Snake 2013 will be even worse in terms of natural disasters.” Well we certainly have seen a lot of those lately. So now let’s see what may happen in the year of the Horse 2014.
The Heavenly Stem for 2014 is Yang Wood (甲).
The Earthly Branch underneath is Wu (午) Fire and its animal sign is the Horse. The hidden elements are Earth Ji (己).
It is always easier to understand an image than reading many words. So here are pictures for year of the horse 2014. Yang Wood sits on top of the Fire (Horse).
Excessive Fire brings:
1. There will be bushfires burning out of control, most likely in the South area, such as Indonesia, Philippines, South Australia, Southern Tasmania, and South Island in New Zealand. (Last year 2013, I predicted fire in the Southeast. It was NSW bushfire in October/November 2013). Make sure you have a good fire plan.
2. Extremely hot weather in year of the Horse 2014. It brings natural disasters in March, April May, September, October and November such as heavy rains, hurricanes, typhoons and bushfire. March, April and May will be more disasters in the Southern hemisphere and September, October, November will be more disasters in the Northern hemisphere. The Year of the Horse 2014 has only 3 dragons producing water. The more number of the dragons (maximum up to 12) which produce water, the more rainfall it produces for the year. Therefore 2014 will be a year with less rainfall.
3. Severe volcanic eruption which brings earthquake, most likely in South America or New Zealand.
4. Yang Wood is kindness but stubborn, whilst Wood Fire is liver fire and liver fire is anger. In the year of the Horse, kindness will be transformed into anger. Therefore there will be more protests, riots, clashes, conflicts, explosions, gun fire and even wars. Will it be war between China and Japan? It most likely will not happen. If so, China will win as the Feng Shui of Period 8 supports China more than Japan. There was a Sino-Japanese war in 1894 (2 Sexagenary cycles before also in Wood Horse year) and at that time it was Feng Shui Period 2 where the Feng Shui luck did not support the Qing Dynasty.
5. There will be more liver and heart related issues, such as hepatitis and heart attacks. Fire element could be circulation system, small intestine, eye and heart problems. We will see more such incidents happen during the year of the Horse. For your own health benefit you should exercise regularly. I suggest you also take health supplements such as Omega 3 fish oil, vitamin C, and vitamin E to reduce cholesterol and prevent blockage of the arteries.
6. This is the Chinese character of 午, the earthly branch for 2014. Its animal sign is horse. It is also the Tai Sui direction. The Horse is a powerful animal. In the past it was used for transportation. Nowadays it symbolises the car and electric power generators. So the car industry in 2014 faces great challenges with car manufacturing factories or car parts factories closing down, workers striking or even car factory explosions. There is also a high possibility that power station explosions will bring electricity issues. In Chinese Astrology the Horse (Fire) clashes with the Rat (Water). As a result, any company that has a logo which looks like a rat may experience difficulties. This includes companies such as Disneyland (Mickey Mouse) and Qantas (Kangaroo Chinese translation is pouch rat).
Year of the Horse is also a Peach Blossom year
The Year of the Horse 2014 is a Peach Blossom or Flower of Romance year which relates to romance, particularly illicit romance, sex scandals and sexual affairs. The year of the Horse will have lot more news similar to the year of the Rat in 2008 and Year of the Rabbit 2011. Year of the Rat 2008 had news on New York Governor Elliot Spitzer’s prostitute scandal, and Hong Kong movie star Edison Chen’s nude photos scandal. In Year of the Rabbit 2011 the former Republican Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sex scandal was exposed. He had fathered a child more than a decade ago with a member of his household staff. The Peach Blossom or Flower of Romance year however is good for the entertainment, beauty and fashion businesses. As I have already explained, in the year of the Horse 2014, Yang Wood sits on Fire. In the Five Element theory Wood produces Fire and as a result too much fire will destroy Metal. Metal relates to the trigrams of Qian and Rui. The trigram Qian is the head, or head of a country, head of a company or head of a house. Rui is young girls. As such these two types of people will easily become angry, lose their temper and make bad decisions.
Fire produces Earth
Earth is property and therefore the property industry will benefit from the Fire.Earth can reduce excess Fire. In Five Quality, Earth is trust and faith. Therefore in the year of the Horse, one’s credibility and integrity is ultra-important and can help avoid unnecessary troubles. Be very careful in March, June, September and October if you are speculating on the share market.
2014 and 2015 is ‘Gold in Sand’“甲午乙未砂中金”
The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch combine and they produce the Metal element in year of the Horse 2014 and year of the Goat 2015. It is called “Gold in Sand”.Gold here means Metal element. Metal element is hidden inside sands. Excessive Fire element damages the Metal element. Metal element is banking and finance, accounting, insurance, mining, metal manufacturing industries and so on.
Annual Flying Star Number 4 is in the Central Palace
In the Year of the Horse 2014, the annual Feng Shui flying star number 4 (4 green) is located in the Central Palace. It is the Wood element and an Academic Star. It also represents a chicken, wind and the thigh. The Annual Start number 4 residing in the centre palace can bring negative issues relating to education and publication. It can also bring issues to chickens and issues causes by wind (hurricanes). Earth LuckEarth Luck is the Feng Shui luck of our house or office and deals with the good and bad yearly Feng Shui energy or Qi where we live, work and play. We need to activate the good energy / Qi and balance any bad energy /Qi.Each year there are three big Sha (煞氣Bad Energy) and two to three lucky stars flying around, depending on the facing and sitting directions of your house. These three Sha are called the Grand Duke or the Tai Sui(太歲), The Three-Killings (三煞) and The Five Yellow (五黃).These three Sha have the power to over-ride any natal Flying Stars chart combination, regardless of how good the Flying Star chart is.The three positive energies or lucky stars are the numbers 6, 8 and 9. Here are the directions and positions of the good and bad energies in the Year of the Horse around your house or office.
Feng Shui Energy Distribution for Year of the Horse 2014
- 1. The Tai Sui (Grand Duke) in the Year of the Horse is located in the South sector between 172.50 to187.50 degrees
- 2. San Sha (Three-Killings) arrives in the North between 372.50 to 22.50 degrees
- 3. The Five Yellow lands in the Northwest sector
- 4. The Power and Promotion Star number 6 is in the West
- 5. The Money and Prosperity Star number 8 is in the South and overlaps with the Tai Sui
- 6. The Flower of Romance Star number 9 is in the North and overlaps with the Three-Killings
A Feng Shui saying states, “Avoid big Sha. Cure medium Sha. Neglect tiny Sha.” (大煞宜避, 中煞可制, 小煞不理)The number one rule to deal with the Sha energy is NOT to disturb it. So ‘Moving Earth’, digging the ground or renovating the above mentioned areas or sectors inside or outside your house is strictly prohibited.
The South sector Wu (172.5 – 187.5 午字位) has the Tai Sui Sha.
The Tai Sui is also known as The Grand Duke and is the yearly King. The Tai Sui is located in the South sector in the Year of the Horse. The Wu sector is the Li Gwa (離卦) and is the Fire element. The Fire Element is related to the Fire system in our body and includes the eyes, heart, blood, small intestine and tongue. So any health issues related to the Fire element could affect the eyes, heart, blood, small intestine and tongue. It is also the middle daughter’s position or ladies aged between the years 20 to 40.If the main door of your house is facing the South, then the middle daughter should pay more attention to the Fire system of her body. The best way to minimize bad luck and sickness energy is not to stir up the yearly bad energy sector. The yearly bad energy is like a sleeping tiger. It will be fine if the tiger has not been disturbed. However if the tiger is awakened, it will hurt you. ‘Moving Earth’ such as digging or renovation will awaken the Tiger (Bad Energy), so DO NOT dig, nail, chisel or renovate the Tai Sui sector including the floor, ground, garden and the walls inside and outside. If your house is facing South and the main door is located in the Tai Sui sector of South then be sure to close the door slowly and gently when coming in or going out, as loud noise, sound waves and vibration can trigger the bad energy. To reduce the impact of the Tai Sui, place a ceramic Sheep or Goat at the side of the main door.
The Three-Killings comes to the North sector (Kan Gua 坎卦337.5 – 22.5)
In the Year of the Horse 2014, the North sector of your house or office has the Three-Killings in it and covers a very large area. The Three-Killings represents lawsuits, gossip and arguments. It is also the middle son’s area or young men aged between 20 to 40 years. The North sector is the Water element. In health it is related to the water systems of our body including kidneys, urethra, prostate gland for male, bladders and other water systems in our body. June, October and December are the worst months for this sector. Make sure the north sector in your house is clean and tidy. Keep this area as quiet as possible. If the Three-Killings bad energy is disturbed there could be 3 unfortunate incidents such as health issues, career problems, traffic accidents or lawsuits happen to the household, This may particularly affect the middle son.In global Feng Shui the Three-Killings sector is the North area of the Northern Hemisphere. It is also the North area of a capital city or the North area of your house or office. The North sector of the Northern Hemisphere is Northern China, Japan and Russia. There will be a lot of issues, such as explosions, gun fires, volcanic eruption or disasters happening there in the Year of the Horse. To minimize the bad effects of the Three-Killings for your house or office, place a ceramic Ox in the North sector. Move any fish tank or any moving object away from this area. You cannot change the main door position, but you can move yourself away from the bad energy areas.
The Five Yellow is at the Northwest area (Qian Gua 292.50-337.50)
The Five Yellow is a bad Feng Shui annual star and represents misfortune and obstacles. In the Year of the Horse 2014, it flies to the Northwest sector of the house. This will affect the father of a household if he sleeps there or the main entrance is located there. Particularly if the father of the house is a bit fat and bald (Bald and fat is the Qian Gua) as he will be affected badly. The Five Yellow Star is the Earth element. It brings issues related to the Metal area of our body such as the respiratory system (lung, nose, skin) and large intestine.Place some water in this area using a round, black pot or vase.
The Romance Star 9, Money Star 8 and Power Star 6
The annual Star number 8 relates to wealth and prosperity and is located in the South sector in the year of the Horse 2014. It overlaps with the Tai Sui sector. As mentioned above it is related to finance. There are a few ways you can activate the money star, except ‘Moving Earth’. You can move to and sleep in this area if there is a bedroom. If there is a doorway, use it more often for coming in or going out. Place a ceramic Sheep or Goat in the area. The Promotion annual Star number 6 comes to the West. The annual Flying Star number 6 is the Metal element and it represents Power and Promotion. To activate this area you need to place 6 x 20 cents coins with the heads facing upward in this sector. Make sure you wash the coins first. The romance annual Star number 9 brings romance and happiness and is located in the North sector. It overlaps with the Three-Killings Sha. The middle son or any male person aged between 20 to 40 needs to pay attention to their relationship. Otherwise a complicated relationship could bring a lawsuit. All the best and have a prosperous Feng Shui Year of the Horse 2014!
Man Luck
Man luck is about each and every one of us so what does the Year of the horse 2014 hold for us?The animal sign of a person is calculated by the year of birth. However a very important concept to remember is that a FULL Chinese Astrology reading examines NOT only the year of birth but also the month, day and hour of birth together with the Luck Cycle and yearly pillars. So it is difficult to completely and fully predict how each year will affect you just by using your Chinese animal or zodiac sign. Such animal sign astrology is not totally reliable as the system only examines 12.5% (1/8) or in some cases 25% (1/4) of the four pillars natal chart. For a more reliable assessment in all aspects of your life in the Year of the horse 2014, it is recommended that you check your Four Pillars of Destiny fully with a reputable Chinese Astrology consultant near you.Based on the yearly Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, some animal signs are more sensitive than others. The most sensitive animal signs affected by the Grand Duke or Tai Sui (太歲) in the Year of the Horse 2014 are the Horse, the Rat, the Rabbit and the Rooster. So these need to be trustworthy, faithful and patient especially those who are born in the year of the Horse and the Rat. More exercise is also beneficial, but not too intense. The Horse, the Rat, the Rabbit and the Rooster should also avoid going to hospitals and funerals. Especially for those who were born in the years 1930, 1990, 1963, 1972, 1981, 1939, 1948.1999 and 2008 (If you are already working in these venues, it is not an issue)
So what does the Year of Horse 2014 hold for you?
Rooster – (Born in 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005)
Rooster people become very moody in the Year of the Horse due to unstable relationships. They should avoid going to night clubs, pubs and erotic bars.To reduce digestive and respiratory systems problems, avoid deep fried, hot and spicy food. Roosters have a good chance to be re-shuffled at work this year. In this case it is good to work for a female boss as you will receive help from a female in the Year of the horse. Be careful with your paper work though as otherwise you will get fined for a mistake. Health: Digestive and respiratory systems problems.Wealth: This will be good if you are in fashion, jewellery, make-up and beauty business.
Ox – (Born in 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009)
Ox people have a ‘Nobleman’ in the Year of the Horse so things are likely to be smooth for you. However there is slander and a misunderstanding from friends or colleagues, even from something you have done with a good intention. Therefore be more cautious when lending a helping hand as your good intentions will not be appreciated. t be a guarantor to your friends or colleagues.Health: Watch out for your digestive system.Wealth: Good, but avoid high risk speculating.
Tiger – (Born in 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010)
Slander by others in the Year of the Snake will fade away and there will be a joint venture or co-operation with new partners. As a result it will bring in benefits to those people born in the Tiger. At work you will also see more appreciation from your superior or receive an award. There is a ‘White Tiger’ 白虎 star in the Tiger palace in 2014. White Tiger is not a good star, so there will be a minor medical operation or caesarean section for a female Tiger if giving birth in 2014. Blood donation is a positive action for the Tiger if you are able to. Health: Digestive system, heart and eyes issues.Wealth: Pay rise or benefit from new partnership.
Dragon – (Born in 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012)
The Dragon is the water storage and it clashes with the Fire of the Horse. The hidden travelling star is also in the Dragon’s palace. Therefore it is a travelling, moving or job changing year for the Dragons in April or October 2014.It is not a happy year of the Horse for the Dragons. There are relatively a few more sad events happening for them and these can make the Dragon people feel lonely and moody.Health: Muscle issue.Wealth: Spend more than usual due to travelling or moving.
Snake – (Born in 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001)

There is a sickness star for the Snake in 2014 which will bring minor health issues such as the flu, tiredness, fatigue or throat problems. These will bring a good study result for the Snake or the chance to study something new or learn a new skill such as cookery.Health: Respiratory and circulation systems.Wealth: Improving.
Goat – (Born in 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003)
Expect an excellent year ahead for those born in the Year of the Goat. The Tai Sui Horse loves the Goat as they combine. A combination means a new joint venture or partnership. It is also the Nobleman year for the Goat. Particularly those people who were born in the Snake month (5th May – 5th June) or Snake hour (9-11am) as they will have a lot of good opportunities. There is a male person who will look after you.
Monkey – (Born in 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004)
There is a Travelling Star for the Monkeys in the Year of the Horse. Monkeys may change to a new job that requires a lot of travelling. Alternately they may move home or travel to a new job. For those Monkeys who are born in June or December, there may be an elderly person in the family who has a health issue and this makes you feel helpless.
Dog – (Born in 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006)
The year ahead for those born in the Dog is very much like the Tigers predictions. There will be a joint venture or co-operation with a new partner and as a result, this brings benefits to them. There is a lucky star call ‘Nation Seal’國印 in the Dog’s palace. The ‘Nation Seal’ gives the Dogs more power and control in the Year of the Horse. Another lucky star called ‘San Tai’ 三台, will bring you fame and money in the year of Snake.Health: Water and Fire system of your body.Wealth: Good.
Pig – (Born in 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007)
The impact from the year of the Snake will be slowly reduced. In the year of the Horse, animal sign Pigs still need to spend some money. However it is a relatively small amount compared with the spending in the Year of the Snake. The Pig and Horse form an underground combination. There may be a love affair waiting to happen. This is good for the singles. For married animal sign Pigs, behave and discipline yourself.Health: Liver and water systems.Wealth: Good.
