Dear Madam Lee, I am planning to renovate my home and would like to put a powder room on the ground floor in the space underneath the staircase.  Is this good Feng Shui as I read somewhere that bathrooms under staircases drain away energy and hurt the home’s occupants –  Mrs. L from  Melbourne

A bathroom under the staircase is a great way to save space in small homes or apartments and would only be a problem if the WC itself was in the very center of the building as the centre is a very important place. It is the Tai Chi or the place where the chi of heaven and earth meet and flow to the rest of the house. We don’t want this chi to be trapped, locked in a wall or going down the drain. This is hard to remedy and really needs a consultant to assess the situation. If this is not the case then congratulate your designers for their space saving idea and enjoy your powder room!
